What to wear for your newborn photo session - a visual guide

Updated: Mar 25

You booked your newborn session and are getting so excited! As your due date and therefore the session comes closer, you start to think about what to wear for the family part of the session.

Closing can make or break your newborn portraits, so choosing wisely with your personality and comfort in mind is recommended.

To help you prepare your outfit for your newborn session, here is a little guide with some tips.

Less is more

This is especially true when it comes to newborn portraiture. Babies are so pure and therefore overcomplicating things with busy patterns and too many colours can be overwhelming, pulling the attention from the star of the show - your precious little newborn - to clothing. It is recommended to stick to one colour palette and avoid large logos or patterns to keep things simple. Neutral colours such as white, taupe, cream, black or navy are always a popular choice for timeless elegant look that won't date.

Be true to your style

A photography is a reflection of who you are, and it is therefore important to wear something that you feel comfortable in and that represents your style.

If you love floral dresses, lace, to show off your tattoos... plan your outfits based on that. Show off your personality and most importantly wear something that you find comfortable - newborn sessions can sometimes take quite a while, so wearing something you feel good in is essential!

Don't overcomplicate accessories

Too much jewellery, scarves or other accessories can easily become a distraction. I would strongly recommend limiting use of accessories to only few pieces that compliment your outfit.

What about kids?

Your newborn will be wrapped in complimenting wrap for your family portraits, but if you have an older child, it is also important to choose the right outfit for them.

For boys a lovely shirt or a plain t-shirt is a brilliant choice, along with jeans or trousers, and big sisters look lovely in dresses. Here are a few examples:
